The 2015 ISAF Team Racing World Championship will be held at Rutland Sailing Club, Rutland Water, UK from the 19-24 July 2015. This ISAF (International Sailing Federation) Grade 1 event is in the same category as the Olympics and is the pinnacle of international, dinghy team racing.
This year, the competition will comprise Open and Under 19 divisions with the top three teams in each section being awarded ISAF championship medals. Teams will represent their MNAs (Member National Authorities) or, for the first time, comprise competitors from joint MNAs.
Each team comprises of three boats with two crew per boat – with at least one male and one female competitor per team. Races are very short (12 minutes) and can be action packed and spectacular.
The top sailors are often Olympic, World and National dinghy champions in their own right. Many will have sailed for university and collegiate teams and have already represented their countries at international level.
There are currently 24 teams expected at the Championship from Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Japan and USA, plus an ASAF (Asian Sailing Federation) team comprising: Indian; Malaysian, Hong Kong and Japanese sailors.
The British GBR 1 team will be the West Kirby Hawks, who are the current World Champions and have recently reformed to defend their title. The GBR 2 team will be the Royal Forth Hoosiers, who are the reigning UK National Champions. The GBR 3 are from Bristol University. The British Under 19 teams are from Magdalen College School, Oxford; Sevenoaks School, Kent and West Kirby SC, Wirral.
The competition will be sailed in 12 foot (3.7m) Firefly dinghies. Rondar Raceboats are generously providing two flights of boats for the event with Oakham and Uppingham Schools and Rutland Sailing Club kindly loaning their fleets.
The Princess Royal, President of the Royal Yachting Association, will be attending the Championship on Monday, 20 July.
Live video coverage of the racing will be available on You Tube along with GPS tracking provided by Sail Racer.
A ‘Virtual 2015 ISAF Team Racing Championship’, hosted by SailX, will also be run in conjunction with the ‘real ‘ event.
Spectators are welcome at Rutland Sailing Club during the Championship.
